D A N K

(1 edit)

this is the perfect fusion of Mario, Zelda and Metroid

PD: Is the game too difficult in the end or is it just my stupidity?

It can be hard, but it feels easy once its done

honestly I found the last puzzle room way too hard, especially since one mess-up forces you to restart

Pretty neat game! The graphics are just beautiful(all tho sometimes not clear), the music sound's great, and gameplay is really fun.

The light management is simply amazing and the overall setting is quite well done. The first times I played it I never found any idols, but as I was exploring more and the first one appeared, that made me want to explore even more to see what secrets I could find, although I have not finished finding all of them.
It won't have much to do with it, but it made me wonder about other games where the protagonist is an explorer archaeologist and things like Pitfall, La Mulana and Spelunki came to mind, even though they all have completely different mechanics.

I share my playthrough of the game.

this is the dankest pico 8 game ive ever played

Ok, so. I played this game twice. 1 just to try it, the second one to get all idols. I was wondering though, does the 3 poems do something or are they just lore? Thanks for the good game and Happy New Year

There are 12 verses, forming one poem - but yeah, it's just a tiny bit of lore for the persistent :)

(+1)

It is a really nice touch. I wish you could read the poem during the game to check if you have completed it. I would also have been nice if at the end of the game the number of verses obtained appeared just like the number of idols collected.

This game is a PICO-8 showcase!

I just donated, please do one more fix so it no longer crashes in version 0.2.1B. Since zep promised the API is now stable that hopefully means no more updates necessary.

The version on the BBS/splore doesn't crash for me on PICO-8 0.2.1b. Can you screenshot the crash?

I think I can almost replicate the error. It seems to only appear when I have the cart saved locally by favoriting or saving it and not running directly from splore. I open the first door and walk left to the machines and then back. Then this message pops up.

I have the same problem

I'll look into that at some point (really focusing on PC Slipways now), but this looks pretty weird, especially since it only happens on a local cart.

Awesome game bro!!!!

This is a great Game!

I was surprised it was a pico-8 game because the graphics looked like it was made in unity

would defiantly would recommend

this was a really great game!!!! thank you for this.

The riddles were great and challenging, some difficult, but I'd say it's a perfect difficulty graduation.

very enjoyable.

Interesting game

Like it but too slow .... maybe a windows build will be faster.....Anyway good atmospheric game

Dat light effect <3

Very much fun!  I like the graphic effect alot :)

Hey. I have a question (sorry if it sounds dumb) how to exactly download the game? I clicked download now and it only downloads the Map and the PICO-8 Cartridge. So sorry if it sounds dumb.

Hi, as you noticed, the downloads are just additional materials for the game. If you're not a PICO-8 user, the best way you can play the game currently is right here on the site, with no download necessary. I haven't prepared a standalone version yet.

i just realized. Heck. Now I sound not only stupid but also not informed well. Thanks for the reply. Appreciated it.

no new praises that haven't already been said. just impressive graphics, utilizing the pico-8 in an interesting way, and cleverly designed puzzles. not sure if it was an inspiration, but it felt like a La-Mulana game on pico-8. excellent game!

Pretty incredible for a Pico-8 game. Great art, sound, music, and puzzle design.

I found the lower edge of tiles difficult to determine. Many times I knew what I wanted to do and was sure I was in the right position, only to die due to poor placement. Very frustrating and ultimately I gave up after Idol 2 because the platforming wasn't fun for me anymore.

I'd like to see this with some sort of cleaner tileset which fixes that issue.

Wonderful game !
Demanding controls, tough puzzles, charming atmosphere... I didn't expect so much fun !

As a minor side note, the fullscreen mode does not seem to work.

Hey, glad you liked it! The fullscreen mode still works for me, can you tell me what browser you were using so I can fix it?

Firefox 67.0.2 64bits

Maybe it is related, I see this error in the JS console :
TypeError: The expression cannot be converted to return the specified type. dankreleasee.js:133

Awesome game thanks! :D
It's really cool to see that you used up so much of the possible tokens and had to use really short variables!

Really enjoyed until I got stuck here

You have to figure out what the wand is for. Hint: It's got a bit more range than the other items :)

I really like this!

Great game, with a really good control feeling !

This is great! :D

what coding format?

BEST> GAMES>EVER.

This is better than most games released on Steam now.

This is perfection. Stunning graphics, intelligent puzzles, perfect level of difficulty. Looking forward to checking out your other work.

oh god the last puzzle

that was fun :)

It feels like a modern Rick Dangerous, I like it!

Hi, good game.

Is the PICO-8 source code commented? Non-minified?

Puzzles aren't much my cup of tea, but lighting is. :) And I have to say I'm impressed by the game (and with what went into the lighting -- I read the articles, and I'll read them again because I like stealthy shadowy games ).

But what's drawing my attention the most right now is your character. I've been struggling with animations (and pixel art) a lot and have been trying to figure out ways around that. If only I could with very subtle animations make characters that don't look static... Maybe you did it for different reasons, but you managed to make a very simplistic animation for your character and yet it works just perfectly. And it's a really cute character too.

I wonder if that would be something you could write about in your blogs as well?

As for the lighting, I find it a bit heavy (well my windows is slow as hell too), but I also find the flickering a bit too abrupt. I wonder if slowing down the flickering wouldn't also reduce the performance issues? (I'm not asking you to change your game, I'm just wondering that.)

I just bought and I must say you've inspired me to code my own games, thank you!

wow. just wow. this is by far the most impressive and most fun pico8 game ive ever seen! :D congratulations! awesome game! i have one tiny complaint though: it is basically impossible to jump diagonally down/right or down/left. that feels a bit strange, especially in the room with the three platforms you push forward/backwards to make your way to the item and the text-thingy.

overall the game is absoloutely stunning. already played hours! well done, keep it up! :D

it's seriously incredible to do that on a pico8. Did you reach the limits of data /tokens ?

Lionel

Repeatedly :) Every time it was harder and harder to whittle down the token count, but it somehow fits in the end (with a few compressed bytes to spare).

I had to buy it just to look at the source.  Very very impressive.

I love the artwork and lighting. The collisions kinda suck though.

This was great. Thanks for stealing those hours from me :P

I think I've got a bug report for you though: It's possible to complete the left-hand side without getting the item in that section. Which confused me pretty thoroughly when trying to get through the room with the three switches. The issue is that it's possible 1) to push things by using inside corners to get an angle on them and 2) to stand on the edges of tiles that are occupied by pushable objects. I used 2 to get through the item-gating room (by getting on the bottom edge of the floating platform and pushing the block up) and I used both to get through the puzzle just afterwards (the last boulder-push required jumping over the gap and *into* the boulder making sure to push it before I could fall)

Thanks, glad you had fun!

About the bug/exploit you found: one other person already stumbled upon it, and it also confused them pretty thoroughly. I wish I had a clean way to fix it, but it's kind of hard to do it without risking breaking something else. I'll think of something though and fix this tomorrow - thanks for the report! (fixed)
